- Carefully open the condom package to avoid tearing the condom itself.
- Put the rolled condom on the erect penis before there is any sexual contact and pinch the reservoir tip to expel air.
- Roll the condom over the penis head and onto the shaft.
- If using non-lubricated condoms or if extra lubrication is desired,
apply a water soluble lubricant on the condom (K-Jel, KY Jelly etc.).
- After ejaculation, hold the rim of the condom when withdrawing the
penis. Check the condom for leaks, and dispose of it - condoms are not
reusable.
Other things to consider when using a condom include:
- Make sure the condom is made of latex. Latex condoms provide better
protection than so called "natural" or sheepskin condoms against the
AIDS virus.
- Lubricated condoms offer better protection against tearing than
non-lubricated condoms. Non-lubricated condoms taste better than
lubricated condoms, and are therefore considered better for oral sex.
- Be sure to use the condom before the expiry date on the condom
package. Store condoms in a cool dry place such as a hand bag, drawer,
or loose pocket. Heat breaks down latex so the glove box in a car, or
back wallet pocket are not recommended for condom storage.
- Additional water soluble lubricant on the condom after it has been
put on will increase the efficiency (K-Jel, KY Jelly etc.). Never use
oil based lubricants such as Vaseline, cooking oil, or hand cream.
These substances break down the latex and make the condoms less
effective.
- Remember, a condom is more effective when put on correctly.
