How can I avoid getting AIDS?

A.I.D.S. (Acquired Immuno-deficiency Syndrome) is caused by a virus called H.I.V. (Human Immuno-deficiency Virus).

Date: 2005/05/02

A.I.D.S. ( Acquired Immuno-deficiency Syndrome) is caused by a virus called H.I.V. (Human Immuno-deficiency Virus).
There is no cure for H.I.V.

H.I.V. is transmitted by:

  • Sexual intercourse with an infected person
  • Receiving infected blood
  • Sharing needles and syringes
  • An infected mother to a baby, either before or during birth, or through breast feeding

You can reduce the risk of getting the virus by practising "safer sex" - using a condom every time you have either anal or vaginal intercourse. (See FAQ entitled "How do you use a condom?"  for information on how to use a condom). Also, sexual partners can give each other pleasure in ways that do not involve sexual intercourse - feel free to explore!
